The top performing
ensemble in the Consolidated High School Band Department is the Wind Ensemble.
The Wind Ensemble has earned the UIL Sweepstakes award for many
consecutive years. This ensemble is open to membership by competitive
audition. Auditions for positions in the Wind Ensemble are held each
spring and challenges are conducted in mid November for students wishing to be
seated in the Wind Ensemble. This 54 member ensemble performs grade 5 and
6 literature of a demanding nature. A few representative works performed
by the Wind Ensemble are: "Paris Sketches" by Ellerby, "Festive
Overture" by Shostakovich, "Ride" by Hazo, "Overture Colas
Bregnon" by Kabalesky and "The Wasps" by Ralph Vaughn Williams.
Due to the demanding
nature of the music, students must commit to regular at home practice to prepare
their individual parts. The Wind Ensmble performs at numerous events each
year including UIL Concert and Sightreading Contest and one or two Festivals
each year.
