Members of College Station school district's bands traveled to West Texas A&M University this summer for band camp.
Student musicians in seventh through 12th grade learned jazz, rhythm reading, music theory, drum majoring, conducting, twirling, double reed making, marching band and flag, along with brass, woodwind and percussion.
Students also enjoyed bowling, racquetball, swimming, pool and table tennis. They also made special trips to the Texas! musical drama and Wonderland Park.
Many of the members returned with trophies: Ashley Petrus, Marching Band Award; Anthony Jackson, High School Flute Ensemble Award; Jacob Altendorf, Middle School Trumpet Ensemble Award; Jacob Christenson, White Band Most Outstanding Member; Abby Craigen, Best Beginner Drum Major; Regan Schulman, Middle School Percussion Ensemble Award; Charlie Howard, Jazz Band Award; A&M Consolidated High School, Most High School Students Attending Camp; A&M Consolidated Middle School, Most Middle School Students Attending Camp; and Michael Dixon, 2nd Place, Band Director Golf Tournament.

"Several students from A&M Consolidated High School were selected to perform in Texas All-State Music Groups: Kyle Johnson, Jazz Ensemble (Tenor Trombone); Kaylie Kahlich, Women's Choir (Soprano 1); June Kang, Philharmonic Orchestra (Violin 1); Rajeev Kinra, String Orchestra (Violin 1); Brennan Lamont, 5A All-State (Cornet/Trumpet); and Katie Park, 4A Symphonic Band (String Bass).
* College Station school bands earned the highest awards and rankings in the UIL Region 8 competition.
The College Station Middle School Band, under the direction of Tim King, earned division 1 ratings and an award in sightreading. The A&M Consolidated Middle School Band, directed by Michael Dixon, won its third consecutive sweepstakes award by earning division 1 ratings in the concert and sightreading portion of the contest.
The A&M Consolidated High School Symphonic Band, led by Mike Rowden, earned the sweepstakes award in the concert and sightreading. The high school Wind Ensemble, directed by Van Henry, won the UIL Sweepstakes award by earning division 1 for performances in marching, concert and sightreading. This is the sixth consecutive year the Consol band has earned the UIL Sweepstakes award."
* The A&M Consolidated High School Jazz Ensemble received superior performance ratings at the Temple Jazz Festival at Temple College on March 28.
The band received high marks from every judge.
Student soloists who received outstanding musicians are: Kyle Johnson, trombone; Andrew Morris, guitar; Tyler Ritchey, trumpet.
Johnson, Dillon Garrett, Stefon Mitchell and Bram Carlson also won an oustanding section award for trombone.
Drumming up donations
Bass drummer Elijah Smith (lower right corner) plays cadence with tom-tom percussionist Chris Viall, who is hidden by his array of drums, while the A&M Consolidated High School Percussion Ensemble plays outside the McDonald's restaurant on Southwest Parkway in College Station on Tuesday as part of "McBand Night," a fundraiser for the Consol band. Part of every food purchase made at the restaurant between 5 and 8 p.m. was donated to the band courtesy of McDonald's. Funds will be used for enhancing band programs at the high school. 
CS students face off in concerto competition
"...Garlick, 17, is the son of Nathan Garlick and Annette Garlick. He is in the 11th grade at A&M Consolidated, where he is a junior representative to the Student Council. He is completing his Eagle rank in Boy Scouts and is active in the youth group at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.
For the past three years, Garlick has been selected for the All-Region Band, and he advanced to the state solo and ensemble competition the past two years. He studies the xylophone with Jon Seale, Van Henry and Clif Jones. Former teachers include Annette Garlick, Tim King, Jason Rabinowitz and Noelle Adams.
Garlick will perform the third movement of Concertino for Xylophone and Orchestra by Tosiro Mayazumi."
Brazos youth concerto contest names 3 finalists
Eoh, 17, is the daughter of Min Sun Eoh and Esther Eoh. She is a senior at A&M Consolidated High School. She began her music lessons at age 12 and currently studies with Penny Zent. A flutist, she will perform Charles T. Griffes' Poem for Flute and Orchestra.
Eoh is an all-state flutist and a four-year qualifier for the University Interscholastic League's region and area bands. She is a member of the student council and president of the National Honor Society. She serves on the principal's student cabinet and is in the band, where she is a member of the drum line. She is a member of Interfaith and is a nationally recognized Spanish student.
Thirty-four A&M Consolidated High School band members earned chairs in the Region 8 All-Region Band.
Twenty-two of those students also earned positions in the Area D All-Region Band and have qualified to compete for positions in the Texas Music Educators Association All-State Band. That competition will be held Jan. 6 at Baylor University.
Region 8 All-Region band members include flute players Yong Eoh, Katie Gibson, Kanika Amin and Anthony Jackson; oboe player Hillary Delgado; English horn player Emily Lamont; bassoon player Marta Swanner; clarinet players Anna Lindquist, Alison Vellas, Caitlyn Rowden, Kelby McMullen, Ellen Smith, Erik Hoffman, Brent Arents, J.D. McGraw and Hayley Rogers; bass clarinet player Yong Her; alto saxophone players Georgia Lagoudas and Chelsea Evans; trumpet players Brennan Lamont, Bin Her and Nick Barber; horn players Sean Ficht and Luis Miranda; trombone players Kyle Johnson and Alex Reece; euphonium player Roy Garcia; tuba players Bram Carlson and Dallas Briles; and percussionists Nate Garlick, Dylan Huff, Sam Bailey, Phillip Zeig and Stephanie Meadows.
Area D All-Region band members include Eoh, Gibson, Amin, Delgado, Emily Lamont, Swanner, Lindquist, Vellas, Rowden, McMullen, Smith, Hoffman, Yong Her, Lagoudas, Brennan Lamont, Bin Her, Ficht, Miranda, Johnson, Garcia, Carlson and Briles.
A&M Consolidated High School Band students competed in All Region Band auditions Dec. 3 at Midway High School in Waco.
Nine students were named to the All-Region Symphonic Band: Yong Eoh, first chair flute; Anna Lindquist, clarinet; Alison Vellas, clarinet; Caitlin Rowden, clarinet; Sean Morley, alto clarinet; Georgia Lagoudas, alto sax; Gabriel Cooper, trumpet; Kyle Johnson, trombone; and Michael Hayes, first chair euphonium.
Seven students were named to the All-Region Concert Band: Maggie Cerami, oboe; Sarah Brown, clarinet; Yong Her, bass clarinet; Josh Borchardt, horn; Mickey Carrigan, horn; Cody Shropshire, trombone; and Bram Carlson, tuba.
The All-District Band has five members from Consol: Lauren Garcia, piccolo; Raegen Rosier, flute; Trevor Scott, alto sax; Zeb Carter, percussion; and Michael Green, percussion.
Three students were named to the All-Region Freshman Band: Katherine Richards, oboe; Mario Noll, trumpet; and Tyler Ritchey, trumpet.
The Symphonic Band, Concert Band and Freshman Band members will attend a clinic workshop and participate in a concert performance Jan. 13 and 14. In addition, the students who reached the area round of competition will audition Jan. 7 for the opportunity to represent their school in the All State Band.
