Performance opportunities for HS band students.
Marching Band. The A&M Consol Tiger Band is the largest spirit organization at A&M Consolidated High School. The 204 member Tiger Band performs at all high school football games, pep rallies, and the annual Bryan College Station Christmas Parade. In addition to the above, the Tiger Band participates in three to five marching contests per year. These contests are generally held the last Saturday of September and throughout the month of October and the first week of November (on state years).
The Tiger Band has a history of sucessful participation in marching contests. The Tiger Band has earned division one ratings for many consecutive years, won the Blinn College Marching Festival the past four years and has won USSBA contest championships the past three years. Additonally, the Tiger Band has represented Region 8 at the Area D Marching Contest each year the contest was held since 1998.
The top performing ensemble in the Consolidated High School Band Department is the Wind Ensemble. The Wind Ensemble has earned the UIL Sweepstakes award for many consecutive years. This ensemble is open to membership by competitive audition. Auditions for postions in the Wind Ensemble are held each spring and challenges are conducted in mid November for students wishing to be seated in the Wind Ensemble. This 54 member ensemble performs grade 5 and 6 literature of a demanding nature. A few representative works performed by the Wind Ensemble are: " Paris Sketches "by Ellerby, "Festive Overture" by Shostakovich, "Ride" by Hazo, "Overture Colas Bregnon" by Kabalesky and "The Wasps" by Ralph Vaughn Williams.
Due to the demanding nature of the music students must commit to regular at home practice to prepare their individual parts. The Wind Ensmble performs at numerous events each year including UIL Concert and Sightreading Contest and one or two Festivals each year.
The Symphonic Band is the second concert organization at CHS. This band is open to student via competitive audition. Students in the Symphonic Band perform grade 4 and 5 literature. This 65 member ensemble is seated in the spring of each school year and challenges for higher chairs are conducted each November. Some representative works performed by the Symphonic Band are "Suite Divertimento" by Gilbert, "Simple Gifts" by Tichelli, and "Spoon River" by Grainger. The Symponic Band performs at numerous events each year including UIL Concert and Sightreading Contest and one or two Festivals each year.
The Concert Band is comprised of approximately 74 students. Students in the Concert participate in Concert and Sightreading Contest and/or one or two festivals per school year. Additionally the concert band performs three to five concerts each year.
Jazz Band. The Consol Jazz Band is one of the most popular musical organizations at CHS. Membership is through competitive audition and all members of the Jazz Ensemble must participate in both marching band and one of the above concert organizations. Memberships is limited to approximately 20 students. In general the ensemble roster includes five saxophones, five trombones, five trumpets, lead guitar, bass guitar and three other rhythm players. The Jazz Ensemble performs numerous concerts each year and also performs in two, or three competitive festivals each year.
Other opportunities for band members.
All State, All Region Band. Highly motivated students are encouraged to audition for the Region 8 All Region Band. Earning a chair in the All Region Band is the first step to earning a chair in the Texas All State Band. CHS has had numerous students earn positions in the Texas All State Band. Recently the following students have been members of the All State Band: Kyle J. Trombone, Brennan L. Trumpet, Yong O. flute, Michael H. Euphonium. Membership in the All State is one o the highest honors a band member can and most all state band members are awarded scholarships to the school of their choice.
Solo and Ensemble. Students in the Wind Ensemble and Symphonic Band are required, and Concert Band members are strongly encouraged to participate in the Region Solo and Ensemble Contest which is held each February. Students earning ones at the region contest may be eligible to partiicipate in the Texas State Solo and Ensemble Contest. Participation in State Solo and Ensemble is optional and the student and parent must make arrangements to participate in this competition. Information is available in the bandhall office.
Indoor Drum Line. CHS participated in indoor drum line acitivities each year. Section of members for the indoor drum line is through audition with the percussion instructor, Jon Seale.
Woodwind Choir. Woodwind Choir is open to all AMCHS band students. The Woodwind Choir performs traditional and modern music written for the ensemble. Interested students should contact Mr. Jones.
Brass Choir. Brass Choir is open to all AMCHS band students. The Brass Choir performs traditional and modern music written for the ensemble. Interested students should contact Mr. Henry
Color Guard/ Winter Guard. CHS supports a very active and growing color guard program. Membership in the Color Guard is open to all non wind players at students at CHS. Auditions are conducted each spring for the fall color guard. In November, auditions are conducted for indoor guard. All students at CHS are eligible to audition for indoor guard.
